I wanted to discuss the pros and cons of using the old Mac Pro for video editing vs. the New Mac Pro and I’d like to hear others thoughts on the subject.

Here’s a brief list of comparisons I have found between the two machines. It basically boils down to the New Mac Pro being faster in terms of processing and graphics but it’s more expensive to upgrade hard drive space since you’d need a thunderbolt array. The old Mac Pro is still pretty damn fast and it’s cheaper to upgrade your hard drive bays to accommodate several large capacity SATA drives.

The bottom line is I think it still might be worth it to buy an older used Mac Pro vs. a New Mac Pro ion terms of bang for your buck. Personally, I still use the 2010 Mac Pro w/ 24GB RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 7950 gfx card and this thing still smokes! I’ll be setting up a speed test scenario soon to compare how many 4K clips an Old Mac Pro can handle vs. a similar test another FCPX website recently did to find out how many 4K clips the New Mac Pro could handle. I’m interested in what the results would be.

So what do you guys think? Dollar for dollar would you go for an old Mac Pro or a New Mac Pro?
