DJI Phantom GoodLuckBuy Gimbal Setup Installation Tutorial

Hey what’s up everybody. My name is Jasper Thayer, Apple Certified Trainer for Final Cut Pro and developer of FinalCutProX.net

In this video I show you how to setup the GoodLuckBuy Gimbal on a DJI Phantom version 1 Quadcopter with pitch control on the transmitter. The cost of the gimbal was $68.88 + $10 shipping. Here’s a link to the gimbal that I used in this tutorial.

Tools needed:

small screwdriver
heatshrink tubing (optional)
soldering iron and soldering supplies (optional)
allen wrench 2mm

Step 1. Unscrew the phantom to get the top lid off
Remove the propellers. Detach the compass.

Remove 4 phillips screws at each tip of the arms.
Remove 2 allen screws near each motor.
Remove 1 allen screw on each arm near the center of the undercarriage.

Step 2. Unplug the GPS and compass to remove the lid.
Unplug the GPS from the NAZA flight controller. This will give you more slack on the lid to work with. Unplug the compass and remove the top lid.

Step 3. Screw the gimbal jello killer on the bottom of the phantom

Attach the rubber absorbers to the jello killer base and use the 2 supplied screws to screw the base to the bottom of the DJI Phantom

Step 4. Wire the power and pitch control for the phantom

The power can be connected to the balance port on the LiPo battery, but I will be using that connector on my battery to plug into a battery monitor and alarm buzzer.

So I will modify the power cable on the gimbal and connect a female jst connection to the gimbal power cord. Then I’ll feed a male jst connection wire through the leg and solder it to the ESC board to feed power to the gimbal. I like doing it this way so that I can save battery life by first powering on the DJI Phantom and waiting a minute for the GPS to locate the satellites and then I’ll power on the gimbal and video transmitter right before I’m ready to take off so that I can maximize the battery life of the flight. This also lets me be able to power up my Phantom first and let the flight controller “set up” and then I can power up the gimbal after the Phantom is all setup and the battery is all buttoned up. I also save unneeded motor use on the gimbal while the phantom is setting up by doing it this way.

I’ll use the wire that’s supplied with the gimbal and plug it into the 3 pins in the control board of the gimbal. If you look close at the circuit board there’s labels for pitch and roll.

I’ll plug the purple wire into the top pin, the blue wire into the middle pin, and the green wire into the bottom pin.

Now I’ll feed the power and pitch control wires of the gimbal into the DJI Phantom. I’ll thread the pitch cable through the body of the phantom and plug it into the F2 port on the flight controller.

There’s three vertical pins on the flight controller. I’ll make sure the purple wire is plugged into the bottom pin on the F2 port on the flight controller. The blue wire is plugged into the middle pin, and the green wire is plugged into the top pin.

Step 5. One more thing. Enable Gimbal Control in NAZA Assistant Software.

Plug the micro USB plug into the DJI Phantom and then turn the transmitter on and put a battery into the DJI Phantom. Then plug the USB cable into your computer and wait for the computer the recognize the DJI Hardware. You may have to download and install the the DJI Driver from DJI website first. Then open up the NAZA Assistant Software.

From NAZA Assistant Software go to Advanced, then go to the Gimbal Tab, and click the radio button the enable the gimbal control. Close the software and unplug the USB and you should be good to go. Do some tests the confirm that the tilt control works on your transmitter. If it does then screw everything back together.

If your gimbal isn’t working then you may have to go over some troubleshooting. First make sure that there isn’t any connections that have came loose on the circuit board for the gimbal. Make sure all of your wires are connected securely and you’re not grounding anything out anywhere.

Also make sure your GoPro camera is connected to the gimbal and the gimbal is secured when you power up your phantom. The gimbal is calibrated to level itself when the weight of the GoPro is included in the system so make sure your GoPro is strapped into the gimbal before you put the battery into your DJI Phantom and power up your equipment.

I didn’t have to update the firmware or anything on the gimbal itself. The gimbal has a micro USB port on its circuit board so you can update any firmware on the gimbal, but everything seems to work straight out-of-the-box. The only thing you really have to make sure of is that you enable the gimbal control in the NAZA Assistant.
